Israeli music scene inspires Yom Limmud

By Hagit Ashual, volunteer in Yom Limmud 2014 Volunteer subcommittee Picking the names for the rooms for each Limmud event is one of the ways to make the event unique. The volunteer steering committee recently had a heated discussion about what we should name the three session rooms. Ultimately our inspiration came from the unexpected departure of Arik Einstein, one of the most iconic and influential performers who shaped the Israeli music and theatre scene. We too want Yom Limmud 2014 to be inspiring. We decided that the creativity of Israeli legends would be perfect for the event. And rightly so, since it is a complex situation with a multitude of issues and consequences to be considered. Since the early days of the establishment of Israel, while the rest of the Israeli Jewish population were conscripted to the IDF, males for 3 years and females for 2, the majority of Haredi (Ultra-Orthodox) Yeshiva students annually postponed their military service until they received an age or parental exemption. With Haredim originally making up a small percentage of the population, (In 1974 2.4% of soldiers enlisting in the army were exempt because they were Yeshiva students), it wasn’t such a major issue. However higher than average birth rates in the religious community saw this grow to 9.2% in 1999. I never thought being Jewish is just a matter of classification; we are told – born a Jew, die as a Jew – a package you take with you for life. But being Jewish is not just a matter of ‘btw I’m Jewish’ – because this classification has no meaning unless you choose to do something about it. So - What does it mean to be a Jew? Whatever you think it is for you; whatever becomes relevant for your Jewish practice - Yom Tov, Chag, mourning, philosophy, or even just through exposure to other Jewish groups and destiny.
