A Note from a Veteran Volunteer

By Dianne Seeto, veteran volunteer at Limmud-Oz

I attended the first Limmud-Oz in Sydney in 1999 and was stunned by the impact it made on me and my friends. It was so stimulating and informative and unlike most lectures I had attended, Limmud-Oz gave me the opportunity to discuss issues raised with fellow participants and speakers.

I thought that no other Limmud-Oz could measure up to the first, BUT I WAS SO WRONG. Each Limmud-Oz has been just as thought-provoking and each time Limmud-Oz is held, it seems to top the previous one. The speakers cover such a broad range of subjects and there are so many sessions you want to attend - usually more than one at the same time.

Limmud-Oz is also very social. Not only do you meet people you haven’t seen for years, but you converse with people you didn't previously know – some from interstate or overseas! There is no need to agree – just exchange ideas. Sometimes you meet people who become lifelong friends! Everyone is sooooo friendly.

I have been a volunteer at every Limmud-Oz. You gain quite a different perspective of Limmud-Oz as a volunteer. Working as part of a team, providing assistance to Limmud-Oz participants and watching all the careful planning come to fruition on the day - this is a reward in itself. I recommend you try volunteering, even if it is just to receive the 50% discount on your attendance fee. If you want more information about volunteering at Limmud-Oz please see our Volunteer FAQ.

Without reservation, I recommend that everyone should come to Limmud-Oz in whatever capacity they choose – presenter, volunteer, co-ordinator, attendee. Children are no hindrance now that they can attend their own Young Limmud program. Make it a family event.

I look forward to seeing you on the June long weekend! #LimmudFever
