Safe exile from China to Australia

By Danny Beran, a serial volunteer-presenter-attendee in Limmud Oz

As a previous Limmud-Oz student, volunteer and presenter, I commend Limmud for a unique learning experience. Among unique qualities the one I enjoy the most is the accessibility to industry experts and their ideas.

One of the unrecognised virtues about Jewish learning is the willingness to give learning and uncertainty so liberally. Teachers have no illusions of management hierarchy, but are most keen for exchange and debate.

One of the driving principles of Limmud is that "every Jew should be a student and any Jew can be a teacher." This usurps traditional communal structures that imply that the educator, rabbi or leader are the ones to teach the community. Limmud allows everyone the opportunity to be a teacher.

This was part of the inspiration behind my decision to present at Limmud-Oz 2013 on the Jews in Shanghai during WWII.

As a direct descendant of two Viennese exiles, based in China by historical circumstance, it was an exhilarating experience as a facilitator to talk to a room packed with engaged students. Including some who had even survived Shanghai. It is not widely known that during WWII Shangai hosted up to 30,000 Jews. It was a miracle in disguise for many trying to escape the atrocities in Europe.

When I wrote my book, '10 Questions You Must answer before you Die', a prominent photo highlighted an example of community in Shanghai; and one of the attendants at the launch said to me "I’m so glad our plight won’t be forgotten!"In essence, Limmud gave me an opportunity to honour the courage and bravery of my parents and others like them who survived this difficult period.

Limmud-Oz is always a varied experience with a chance to learn something new about something you thought you already knew a lot about or something you might never have heard of before. It's a smorgasbord of opportunities.

This year on June 15 we have a great program with leading international presenters from Israel and the US as well as local experts talking on topical issues like social media and hate speech, the "Israel lobby", the 18C debate, the war in Syria and the realigning Middle East and much more.
